The Mary Valley Rattler is a Steam Train with a difference.

Experience the Cooloola Regions Mary Valley aboard the Valley Rattler - easily one of Queenslands most scenic railway lines. This historic 40 km journey commences at Gympie, and after crossing the Mary River, negotiates an abundance of curves, gradients and bridges to pass through the small country villages of Dagun, Amamoor and Kandanga to Imbil. Disembark at any of these original stations, fully restored and landscaped, where you can enjoy interesting excursions within the district and good old-fashioned country hospitality.

The Mary Valley Rattler steam train is a fully restored heritage locomotive from the early 1920s which departs Gympie station at 10 am.

As you travel south, you pass through the southern end of the city of Gympie which was founded on the discovery of gold in 1867. With its winding main street following the original bullocky trail, Gympie boasts many heritage buildings as living proof of its golden past.

The Gympie Station itself dates back to pre-1880. Other attractions in Gympie include the Gympie Gold Mining Museum and Woodworks Timber & Forestry Museum, which features a working blacksmiths shop and steam driven sawmill.

Depart the Sunshine Coast this morning and head north to the town of Gympie, where you board the Valley Rattler Steam Train for a truly memorable trip traveling along one of Queenslands most scenic railway lines.

Meander through beautiful Mary Valley and the small towns of Dagun, Amamoor and Kandanga before arriving at Imbil. Browse the markets stalls and watch the steam locomotive turn around for its return journey. We now rejoin our mini coach and travel through Bellbird country to Kenilworth for lunch.

Time spent wandering the main street will reveal the charm of this country Queensland town. Next, its onto the Little Yabba Creek rainforest walk where you will marvel at the gigantic Moreton Bay Fig trees.

Self Drive


Drive up the Bruce Highway to Gympie and take the Tin Can Bay Rd turnoff on your right shortly after you get to Gympie. Continue along this road, past the Tin Can Bay turnoff and you will come to Tozer St when you see the overhead bridge. Turn right and the Station is on your left.
