Tribal Theatre

Tribal Theatre

The old Dendy Cinema - now Tribal Theatre, was the most prominent art house cinema in Brisbane. Modest from the outside, the interior decor creates a perfect atmosphere for a truly authentic cinema experience.

The George Street site originally housed The Lyceum, which opened is 1906‎ as Brisbanes first permanent picture theatre, the theatre was renamed the Elite Theatre in the 1920s, rebuilt at the George in 1965 (turned into a twin) then became the Dendy, and is now Tribal Theatre.

Tribal Theatre opened with the vision to bring back an old fashioned movie experience, with nearly halved prices compared to other Brisbane cinema experiences.

Tribal Theatre shows Arthouse, Cult, Australian, Short & Classic films. We have many monthly events, including Grindhouse 101 & Arthouse 101 presented by Andrew Leavold, Kristian Fletcher Cult Nights, Emerging Filmmakers Nights, International Film Nights, and many other events co hosted by us.

We very happily take on smaller Aussie films that the big guys wont, and really want to give great films an encore. Both cinemas are available for hire at very reasonable prices, and we have played host to some wonderful music in Cinema 2, fundraisers, parties, exhibitions & presentations.

Tribal Theatre needs your support to keep our doors open, we are one of the last independent cinemas, owner operated, and supporting the small guys!
