New Farm Park |
New Farm Park is a 18 hectare public park on a bend in the Brisbane River.
New Farm Park is a huge park that's exceptionally popular amongst locals as a large, well-equipped slice of greenery not far from the CBD.
The city's grandest century old park, New Farm, began life as a farm, then a racecourse followed by years of wilderness until it was purchased by BCC.
Most of the park's original features have been preserved, including the ornate 1915 bandstand by the river, its circuitous avenue of jacarandas and the splendid rose garden which was extended during the 1950s and contains tens of thousands of roses.
The unrivalled attraction for children, howe'ver, is the swathe of interconnected tree houses set in a grove of magnificent aged banyan trees and the extensive playground of old and new that has sprung up around it. On Sundays jazz bands frequently play the rotunda as the park is inundated by picnickers, families and Sunday strollers.
Only three CityCat stops from the Central Business District, the inner-northern village of New Farm has long been a place to connect with others. Relax in the beautifully shaded surrounds of New Farm Park, where picnickers seem almost permanently perched on deck chairs and checked rugs.
The historic Brisbane Powerhouse, situated right next to New Farm Park, is also a must-see, playing host to live arts, weekend farmers markets and moonlight cinema (seasonal).
Eighteen hectares of superbly planned horticultural delights, flanked by a myriad of community and commercial precincts totally at peace with the environment in which they find themselves.
On weekends, the park is home to the popular New Farm Markets where fresh produce can be purchased, and if visiting it's a good idea to take public transport due to scarcity of parking. It's an excellent all-round public space to visit in Brisbane.
