BRISBANE'S Lord Mayor wants daylight saving introduced in Queensland before the city's 2032 Olympics, boldly declaring most of the Sunshine State would vote yes if there was another referendum.

Adrian Schrinner said it was time for a fresh look at the concept, despite reluctance from the state government and opposition, with a new university study showing an overwhelming majority of Queenslanders supported daylight saving.

Clocks in southern states have wound forward an hour this morning, leaving Queensland behind the times once again. But with the Brisbane Olympics slated for 2032 winter, there is support for the introduction of daylight saving to ensure more afternoon sunlight during the event.

Mr Schrinner, who has previously endorsed the return of daylight saving in Queensland, said he understood the issue ignited fiery debate, but it was time to at least hold a new conversation.

"I understand why people in regional Queensland don't want daylight saving - they've effectively got the benefits of it already, given how late the sun sets throughout spring and summer," he said.

"However, it's been over three decades since daylight saving was trialled in Queensland and in that time Brisbane and the rest of the southeast corner have grown incredibly.

"We now have a vastly bigger and more mature outdoor lifestyle, including a fantastic restaurant and cafe culture.

"The introduction of daylight saving would deliver a significant economic dividend to this industry as well as many others."

He said he believed Queenslanders would vote in favour of daylight saving if another referendum was held and the time switch "made sense" ahead of Brisbane's transformation into an Olympic city.

"I've got no doubt that if another daylight saving referendum were to be held again now the 'Yes' vote would win statewide," he said.

Neither the state government or the opposition wanted to entertain the concept when approached.
