Now this is a side that has unfinished business with two grand final appearances for no silverware. It's something that burns for Craig Starcevich's Lions who have been ever so close to premiership glory. It's a shame because the Lions look like they could be on Struggle Street in 2020 after newcomers Gold Coast entered the competition and did to the Lions what the Eagles did to the Dockers, poaching players to come down the highway.
Champion Data says they've lost 155 games of experience and, as a result, there are holes galore. With the amount of talent that departed the club, a host of draft picks came back the other way, and the Lions have undoubtedly invested in the draft. Lily Postlethwaite was taken at pick No.3 overall, while Isabel Dawes (15), Catherine Svarc (16), Hannah Hillman (17) and Lucy Bellinger (20) rounded out their five top 20 selections.
The Lions will benefit from another season under the belts of Alexandra Anderson and Emily Bates while Kate Lutkins will have her work cut out holding down a key post in the backline. Gun forward Jess Wuetschner will have a delayed start to the season after being struck by lightning, but it'll be a year or development and opportunity at the Gabba in 2020.
