Everything is a game, but not everyone is playing
Had the disarmingly sincere Free Guy been able to enjoy a full national release into Australian cinemas, it almost certainly would have been one of the bigger movies of 2021.
The lead character of Free Guy is a guy named Guy (Reynolds).
Just like Emmet in The Lego Movie, Guy leads a blindingly sunny, blankly repetitive existence as a bank teller in the mythical metropolis of Free City.
Guy has a catchphrase, and he is not afraid to use it at every opportunity: "Don't have a good day. Have a great day!"
The more Guy says this, the more you begin to notice the world around him in Free City is anything but great. Or, for that matter, good.
Free City is a crime-riddled metropolis where heists, hold-ups, explosions and car chases happen on an every-other-minute basis. A sizeable percentage of customers at Guy's bank are there to put a gun in his face.
So what is going on here? Well, that takes a little explaining. No, make that a lot of explaining.
Let's leave aside many minor details and settle for just the one major plot point: Guy is actually a secondary character in a wildly popular multi-player video game.
Technically speaking, Guy not only does not exist. He is also programmed to respond to every single in-game situation in the same, smiley-face way.
So everything is awesome, right? Wrong. The authors of the game, Millie (Jodie Comer) and Keys (Joe Keery), have had their creation stolen and exploited by a maniacal entrepreneur (Taika Waititi). Their only option to save face and gain revenge is to destroy the game from within. So Millie enters the field of play as a VR avatar, where she crosses paths with Guy. Suddenly, Guy no longer obeys his original programming. In fact, he begins openly rebelling against it.
Thematically speaking, you have definitely seen movies vaguely similar to Free Guy before.
This big-budget star showcase for a softer, lighter non-Deadpool side of Ryan Reynolds throws the likes of The Truman Show, The Lego Movie, and Ready Player One into a blender, then mixes the whole lot at top speed. While the contents of this concoction do take some time to settle, they ultimately form something that will definitely appeal to the tastes of a majority of movie goers.
Free Guy is now showing in cinemas in selected states, and streams exclusively in the Star section of the Disney+ platform (no premium surcharge applies).
